The Cake Turntable Beginning
Let's start at the beginning. Our cake journey began at a Wilton cake decorating course at our local craft store. During the class, we didn't have the chance to utilize a turntable for decorating - possibly because of the space requirements, cost of the turntables, logistics involved, or any combination of these and/or other factors. We did, however, have a lot of piping practice on flat surfaces, and, more importantly, this class would serve as the catalyst for our love of cake decorating, and why we ultimately ended up at Pastry School.
Pastry school is where we were first introduced to the techniques of frosting a cake with a turntable. So when it came time to start baking and frosting cakes on our own, we knew we had to get some sort of turntable so that we could spin the cake while using our angled spatula and scraper to create the smooth, flat frosting that is essential for a well-made cake.
Our first purchase was a plastic turntable. But, we quickly learned that for the smoothest possible frosting, this plastic version just wouldn't cut it. It lacked a smooth turn, and would even jump at times, leaving marks on the cake and also leaving a frustrated cake designer in its wake.
Time To Get Serious About Frosting Cakes
So when we began to get serious about perfecting our frosting techniques, the one thing that was holding us back was our cake turntable. We scoured the web, read reviews, and finally found the perfect one. The
Ateco Revolving Cake Stand is sturdy, has a smooth turn, and has more height than most cake stands with an almost vintage look. The smooth turn is the most important part of the Ateco Revolving Cake Stand, and is why it's one of our favorite things when it comes to decorating our cakes. Made out of a cast iron base, the Ateco Revolving Cake Stand is quite heavy. The turntable is made out of a thick aluminum and the cake stand turns smoothly without wobbling which aides in producing a great and hassle free product. Another great feature about the Ateco stand is that it is 5 inches high, making it easier to frost cakes as it's higher up than most other cake stands. The height is also helpful when placing fondant and other decorations on the cake.
Ateco Roots
Ateco, with its German roots, offers a wide array of cake decorating tools. It's also known for being innovative and well-crafted, as they deliver great and innovative cake decorating supplies worldwide.
