Sweet Plantains Recipe
Sweet plantains are a delicious and quick dessert that can be made on the stovetop in just minutes. If you've always looked at the plantains in the produce section, but never actually picked one up, now is the time. Unlike the bananas that you're probably used to, plantains are not typically eaten raw, and are starchy instead of sweet. The secret in this simple recipe is caramelizing the plantains in butter and brown sugar, which makes this a treat you can have alongside dinner, with a scoop of ice cream, or just enjoyed by themselves (which is what we prefer). Before You Get Started Making Sweet Plantains
Measure/Weigh all the ingredients
Sweet Plantains Ingredients And Amounts (Yields ~8 pieces)
2 ripe plantains - cut in half lengthwise and then each piece cut in half
4 tbsp (57g) unsalted butter
2 tbsp (27g) light brown sugar
1 tsp (4g) vanilla extract
1 tsp (2g) cinnamon
Sweet Plantains Step-By-Step Directions
1) Cut off each end of the plantain with a paring knife. Cut the plantain in half lengthwise and then cut each remaining piece in half widthwise (perpendicular from first cut). You should be left with 4 relatively equal sized pieces of plantain. Repeat with second plantain. Remove each plantain piece from the peel.
2) In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
3) Place the plantains flat side down in the butter and fry for about 10 minutes, or until a nice golden brown color. Turn the plantains over, and fry for 10 more minutes or until golden brown.
4) Add the brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon, stirring carefully for 1 minute. The sugar will begin to caramelize.
5) Remove from heat and serve.
